ICCF 2015-034: Linear Conditionals in Server Events

Welsh Correspondence Chess Federation (WCCF)

Linear Conditionals in Server Events

Proposal

The option to allow or disallow conditionals for server events is removed from the tournament set up page and that conditional moves are allowed in all events.

Rationale

Currently, conditional moves in server events are prohibited by ICCF rules, this rule, however, is frequently ignored by tournament organizers, This means that the availability of conditional rules is a lottery, usually determined by the personal preferences of the tournament organizer.

The ICCF helpdesk receives several emails each month from confused players who do not understand why conditional moves are unavailable in particular games; this is often reported as a server bug.

In addition, the number of options available to tournament organizers has become unwieldy and confusing; any simplification of the setup screen would surely be welcomed by many tournament organizers.

WCCF believe that the server should behave consistently, and that a rule which is not universally applied is no rule at all.  We therefore propose:

  1. That Rule 4 is removed from the Server Playing Rules.
  2. that the option to allow or disallow conditional moves is removed from the tournament setup page of the server, and that the availability of conditionals is applied universally,
  3. and that conditional moves will be available in all server events

Other Comments/Considerations

The server programming required to implement this proposal would be trivial, it would only require the removal of a checkbox from the tournament setup screen.

Voting Summary

  • A vote of Yes will mean that linear conditionals become available in all ICCF Server Events
  • A vote of No will mean that linear conditionals are set at the discretion of the Tournament Organiser in ICCF server events
  • A vote of ABSTAIN is not a vote but means the vote holder has no opinion and does not wish to represent the correspondence chess players of his or her federation in this matter.
