ICCF 2015-020: Honorary Member and Lifetime Achievement Awards

Ian M. Pheby

Honorary Member and Lifetime Achievement Awards

Proposal

1.  Honorary Membership

The ICCF has an unwritten rule that Honorary Membership of the ICCF is awarded to players for 25 years of outstanding service and distinction to the ICCF, or earlier if Congress considers the recipient to be deserving of Honorary Membership.

It is proposed that formal adoption occurs that Honorary Membership is awarded to players for 25 years of outstanding service and distinction to the ICCF, or earlier if Congress considers the recipient to be deserving of Honorary Membership.

2.  Lifetime Achievement Award

The ICCF has an unwritten rule that the Lifetime Achievement Award is awarded to players for 50 years of outstanding service and distinction to the ICCF. This is far too long, and some players with significant exceptional service and distinction to the ICCF are currently unlikely to receive this award even though they are deserving of it.

It is proposed that formal adoption occurs that the Lifetime Achievement Award is awarded to players for 35 years of exceptional service and distinction to the ICCF, or earlier if Congress consider the recipient to be deserving of this award.

Rationale

These changes should be implemented in order to formalise the procedures for awarding to players Honorary Membership and the Lifetime Achievement Award of the ICCF.

Other Comments/Considerations

1. Article 18 (2) of the Statutes of The International Correspondence Chess Federation (page 4) applies to the election of Honorary Members but is silent with regard to potential recipients of a Lifetime Achievement Award. An amendment to Article 18 (2) is therefore required to cover the Lifetime Achievement Award.

2.  It is suggested that recipients of Honorary Membership and recipients of a Lifetime Achievement Award would receive a certificate and an engraved plate in silver. Their names will also appear on the Roll of Honour on the ICCF server and in other records maintained by the ICCF.

Relevent Documentation

Article 18 (2) of the Statutes of The International Correspondence Chess Federation

Should proposals 1 and 2 above be adopted, this Article should be amended as follows:

Delete the current text and insert new text:

Players who have served the ICCF with outstanding service and distinction for a period of 25 years, or earlier if Congress approves, shall be elected as Honorary Members of the ICCF by a two-thirds majority of Congress. Players who have served the ICCF with exceptional service and distinction for a period of 35 years, or earlier if Congress approves, shall be elected as recipients of a Lifetime Achievement Award of the ICCF by a two-thirds majority of Congress.

Voting Summary

  • A vote of Yes will mean that players with outstanding/exceptional service and distinction will be recognised by the ICCF as Honorary Members/recipients of a Lifetime Achievement Award.
  • A vote of No will mean that players with outstanding/exceptional service and distinction will not necessarily be so recognised by the ICCF.
  • A vote of ABSTAIN is not a vote but means the vote holder has no opinion and does not wish to represent the correspondence chess players of his or her federation in this matter.
